Strong Presence of ETS Products in U.S. Government Programs

The TOEFL® and TOEIC® family of products are strongly represented in governmental institutions and ministry projects worldwide, but ETS English language learning products have been offering solutions for, in particular, U.S. government-related programs over the years. This type of support for our products helps foster a credible image for ETS brands, and provides strong English learning solutions to a highly influential client: the U.S. Government.

For example, Latin America uses both the TOEIC and TOEFL families of products in numerous government funded programs as reliable measures of English proficiency. The US Embassy in Mexico uses the TOEIC exam as a preliminary screening tool to identify potential new employees. TOEFL® Junior is used with adolescent students in the English Access Microscholarship Program in Mexico, Peru and Brazil. The Access Microscholarship Program provides a foundation of English language skills to talented 14-18 year olds from disadvantaged sectors through after-school classes and intensive summer sessions. Access students gain an appreciation for American culture and democratic values, increase their ability to participate successfully in the socio-economic development of their countries, and gain the ability to compete for and participate in future U.S. exchange and study programs.

Since its inception in 2004, approximately 70,000 students in more than 85 countries have participated in the Access Program.

TOEIC® Bridge has been integrated into the Access Microscholarship Program in Argentina and Costa Rica to help support their student’s professional aspirations.

The U.S. Embassy in Brazil decided to adopt the TOEIC Bridge exam for their Public School Teacher, and their Young Ambassador Programs. Most recently, ETS has collaborated with the U.S. Embassy in Brazil, the Fulbright Commission, and the Brazilian Ministry of Education in the implementation of the Brazilian government’s English Without Borders program. The TOEFL ITP assessment will be used as the preferred implementation tool in federal and state universities to place students in the new Brazilian government-sponsored English language study program.

Aside from Latin America, the U.S. Embassy in India and Thailand has also adopted the TOEIC test. They use the program for their language training courses or for hiring and employee development.

Another institution, American Language Center in Amman Jordan, is a division of the America Embassy in Jordan, and is the first American Embassy division in Middle East that accredits TOEIC for recruitment. They have the full TOEIC product line available at their premises.

Each of these reputable U.S. Government sponsored programs has helped promote the TOEFL and TOEIC family of products.

Increasing the use of ETS products through U.S. Government sponsored activities and projects could open a wide field of growth possibilities in other markets that see U.S. Government’s use of ETS English-language assessment products as a testimonial to their effectiveness
